take spring exercise program in stride

Caroline Meyer recalls how easy it was to make a midday walk a part of
her daily exercise routine.
“We were surprised that about all it took was a pair of tennis shoes,”
said Meyer, a member of the Do Wophs - Daring Old Women Of Public Health
School.
The Do Wophs were a four person team that participated in Walking Works
Winter ’07, a six week physical activity competition from Jan. 21 – Mar.

The competition, which will be offered again this fall, was sponsored by
USC Wellness Works and in part by the Staff Enrichment Committee.
Teammates exercised and competed with other teams to see which group
could obtain the most points and win prizes.
An
estimated 100 persons participated in the program across the Columbia
campus.
The Do Wophs included Lucy Hollingsworth, team captain; Susan Cate,
Marty Lopez and Meyer.
In
addition to the exercise, the midday walks also offered a chance to
break a lunchtime habit of consuming calories instead of burning them,
said Meyer.
After a few weeks, team members began to see the health benefits of
their daily walks. Hollingsworth reported she had noticeable improvement
in her yearly stress test; another member noticed that she got to sleep
easier and slept sounder.
